Abstract
Comprehensive reports on infection of the C.N.S. refer almost exclusively to the _intracranial cavity. It is apparent that spinal paragonimiasis is an uncommon ectopic manifestation of the lung fluke.
In this paper 18 cases of spinal abscess, of which 11 cases are of paragonimiasis origin and 7 cases pyogenic ii origin, are reported. Differential diagnosis is usually difficult because of the similarity of symptoms and signs with benign spinal cord tumors.
The extradural space in the lower thoracic region is the most frequently affected
area. Laminectomy with removal of the lesion supported by chemotherapy is the treatment of choice.
When treated early, prognosis of this type of manifestation is usually favorable.
